A pipe failing quietly for months before it finally announces itself is a pattern this village's oldest streets produce more often than most stops on our round.

Development followed the railway in, and most of the housing stock went up in the decades either side of 1900, so a great deal of what's buried has now had well over a century to move, crack and settle.

The ground itself doesn't help. This village sits where the terrain starts tipping toward the creek valleys nearby, so a block near the low end of that slope deals with more runoff and silt than a block sitting further up the same street.
